Siam-Ratchathewi: A Neighborhood Woven from Silk and Stories

Beyond the skyscrapers lies the hidden charm of Bangkok—a charm you can only truly discover on foot. As one of the most vibrant areas of Bangkok and home to Thailand’s top university, government centers, hospitals, and massive complexes of department stores, Siam attracts thousands of tourists and locals every day. Yet, unknown to many, beneath this popular buzz lies a captivating history.

If you walk north from Siam for 15 minutes, you will arrive at the Ratchathewi junction, where Petchaburi Road and Phaya Thai Road intersect. Here, high-rise condominiums are interspersed with local shops and restaurants. Like other districts of Bangkok, the food is abundant and indicative of the local heritage. In Ratchathewi, Islamic cuisine is dominant, centered around the “Baan Krua” community that stretches along the Saen Saeb Canal. Established during the reign of King Rama I in the early 19th century, the original residents of Baan Krua were Muslims of Cham descent who were granted this land after serving in the Siamese army during the Burmese–Siamese War (1785–1786).

One of the major cultural heritages the settlers brought with them was silk weaving, which became a vital source of income—especially when Jim Thompson revitalized the Thai silk industry by exporting it to the U.S. in the 1950s. Mr. Thompson lived just across the canal so he could oversee the trade in person. Today, his home is the Jim Thompson House Museum, where visitors can explore his personal relics and the onsite art space.

Although only one silk-weaving factory remains operational today, the historical charm of Baan Krua still lingers. Next time, don’t just pass through Ratchathewi; take a walk. You will find old wooden buildings, quiet waterways, and stories hidden among the skyscrapers.
